iTunes Error – You Cannot Authorize More Than 5 Computers

I’m not sure how this has never happened to me before, but this morning while syncing my iPhone to my laptop I had the message pop up, “You cannot authorize more than 5 computers”.

You cannot authorize more than 5 computers - iTunes

Now, when an iPhone is synced to a computer that isn’t authorized none of the apps that you have purchase through the iTunes Store will work. On your phone you will see their initial splash screen, and then they will immediately close. I had no idea what computers were authorized via iTunes.

Fortunately, Apple makes it pretty simple to deauthorize all of the computers that are attached to your account at one time even if the computers aren’t nearby. Below, I’ll give your step-by-step instructions on how to deauthorize all of your iTunes computers at once the easy way.

1. Open iTunes and navigate to the iTunes Store

2. Click Sign In the upper right-hand corner

Sign in to iTunes

3. Click on your account name or email address (same place as Sign In)

4. Click on Account

5. Click the button that reads Deauthorize All and confirm the deauthorization

Deauthorize All - iTunes

Confirm Deauthorization

That’s it. You can now reauthorize the computer that you are working on, plus four more computers.

Success

**Note: Your can only use the Deauthorize All option once every 12 months. Use it wisely.

Thanks for the tip! Just used it on a newly purchased machine. It wasn’t a Mac, but don’t hold that against me :).
